Research Interests:
David Hicks specializes in Southeast Asia, and in particular Indonesia and East Timor. Besides working in East Timor, he has carried out field research in Flores and has been employed as a consultant by the Bank in central Java. His topical interests are in ritual and belief, mythology, kinship, politics, and development. He received doctorates from the University of Oxford and the University of London, and grants from the American Philosophical Society, the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, in addition to being a scholar-in-residence at the Rockfeller Foundation's center in Bellagio and delegate in East Timor of the Carter Center. He is the author or coauthor of five books and editor of a textbook in belief and ritual..
